Modder Scott Yu-Jan creates innovative portable Mac Mini M4 using 3D-printed case, touchscreen monitor, and Apple Magic Keyboard.

The Mac Mini M4 has been transformed into a portable workstation through a creative DIY project by modder Scott Yu-Jan, who designed a custom 3D-printed enclosure incorporating a touchscreen monitor and Apple Magic Keyboard.

Initial stability issues prompted Yu-Jan to reposition the Mac Mini inside the case for better balance. The custom-designed enclosure maintains access to essential ports, fan intake, and power functions, with an additional button added to simplify the power control.

Yu-Jan created the case using 3D modeling software, drawing inspiration from classic Apple design aesthetics, including the original Macintosh. The components were produced using a high-precision Bambu Lab 3D printer. The completed assembly integrates the Mac Mini, monitor, and keyboard into a unified device, featuring a dedicated monitor slot and keyboard space. TPU padding was incorporated to enhance stability, protect surfaces, and improve durability.

The setup requires connection to an external power source, as it lacks an internal battery. Yu-Jan noted this limitation but considered it a minor inconvenience since power outlets are commonly available in locations like coffee shops.

While impressive as a demonstration of 3D printing and design capabilities, the portable Mac Mini M4 project represents a complex and potentially costly alternative to the MacBook Air M4. The absence of a trackpad, need for external power, and assembly requirements make it less practical for mainstream users.
