Scandinavian firm expands into additive manufacturing with advanced metal printing system from Nikon SLM Solutions.

LaserTool Expands Manufacturing Capabilities

Scandinavian laser hardening provider, LaserTool, has introduced 3D printing to its business having commenced its partnership with Nikon SLM Solutions by acquiring its first SLM 500 system.

The investment is intended to meet growing local demand for advanced, high-strength steel products and strengthen the region’s manufacturing and technology leadership.

Customers will be able to take advantage of the company’s 20 years’ experience in laser hardening to manufacture large structural parts, spare parts, tools and prototype components using high-strength steel powder from SSAB.

To accommodate the expansion, LaserTool is adding 400 square meters of production space for the new equipment.

“We are excited to help LaserTool as they aggressively move into additive manufacturing,” commented Nikon SLM Solutions’ CEO, Sam O’Leary.

System Installation Expected Next Year

SLM 500, capable of high-throughput production of intricate metal components, will be operated using alternative energy sources to support LaserTool’s sustainability goals.

The system is expected to commence operation in the second quarter of 2025.

LaserTool CEO Martin Nilsson: “This investment will enable us to keep up with increasing market demand and consolidate our position as a complete manufacturing partner.

The expansion is part of a wider trend, with Nikon recently partnering with the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency for additive manufacturing development. Separately, semiconductor manufacturer Veeco has acquired Nikon’s NXG XII 600 system to integrate AM into its production processes.
