Self-balancing robot uses omni wheel technology to maintain stability in two directions.

Inventor and YouTuber James Bruton has created a single-wheeled, 3D-printed self-balancing robot.

It stands on an omni wheel driven by 2 motors. One motor controls forward and backward motion, while the second manages side-to-side stability through the wheel’s rollers.

A Teensy 4.0 microcontroller serves as the central processing unit, sending commands to the VESC speed controller that operates the hub motor in the wheel.

Bruton’s design uses readily available components and 3D-printed parts, making it accessible for technically-skilled hobbyists to recreate.

Unlike commercial products such as the OneWheel, this prototype focuses on experimental design and currently demonstrates stationary balancing rather than movement capabilities.

While the robot maintains its position effectively when disturbed, attempts to steer it using a remote control were unsuccessful.
